Algorithms to Live By
The Computer Science of Human Decisions
Brian Christian
Algorithms to Live By How I consumed the book: Audible
Algorithms to Live By Short Recap: Although the talk of algorithms might turn you off, this is an insightful view of how computers try to solve the problems we run into every day. Consider the decision we make daily, should we continue to look for a new job, new partner or new restaurant or should we take the best option in front of us. And, if you make a choice now, are you missing out on better opportunities?
When you put computer science and algorithms in the context of making human decisions it becomes much more interesting. Take a deeper look into how people go about decision making and how to help improve your decisions.

Algorithms to Live By Application to Business: Algorithms are most synonymous with business and investing as a way that computers can make us more effective. However, thinking like a computer can also help us make better individual decisions. One of the oldest computer science problems is the secretary problem with relates to making the best hiring decision. When you do not know the applicants in advance how can you know whom the best candidate is or if you are missing out on the perfect candidate.
Computer science tells us that in order to have the best chance of success we want to “look then leap” and use the 37% rule. If you have 10 candidates, the math says that you should interview the 3rd and possibly 4th candidate and then immediately hire anyone that is the best you have seen thus far. Although you cannot guarantee anything this gives you the greatest chance for success.
Algorithms to Live By Application to Life: Computers focus much of their energy on sorting and recalling information. That recalls the time we spend finding a sweater or a pair of shoes. If we apply some of the computer science efforts, we can use caches to streamline our retrieval. Consider, the computer science philosophy that if you have used something recently you will probably use it again soon. So, before you tuck your favorite t-shirt or comfortable shoes in the back of the closet consider that you are probably going to use them soon so keep them handy.
As the book suggests this can be taken to a new level, with a location for commonly used items, closet for regularly used items and storage for rarely used items. Do your jeans from high school really need to be in your closet?
