COCTEAU TWINS - IVO

On this date in 1985, the ‘NME Readers Poll Winners '84 EP’ was given away free with copies of the NME and included a new recording of the track IVO by COCTEAU TWINS, (May 25th, 1985).

1984’s Treasure, was Cocteau Twins most beautiful yet oblique offering to date, and led with the track IVO dedicated to Ivo Watts-Russell, co-founder of the 4AD record label.

Acting as an overture to the album by introducing names like Pandora, Persephone that appear in other songs on the album, the tracks on Treasure were not just pulled out of mythological tales but happened to feature in the everyday environment.

“They’re beautiful words,” said Liz Fraser in 1985.

“It’s strange; there’s three buildings around Hammersmith, on the way from the Odeon to The Riverside, with names off Treasure. Also, in Holland, there’s three buildings right next to each other and they’re names off Treasure as well. It’s incredible. We didn’t know about them. The names didn’t come from anywhere. They just came.”

“I don’t think it helped sales at all. All that “Persephone” business.”
The video here features the BBC Peel session version of IVO.
