TEARDROP EXPLODES - REWARD (TOTP, Christmas Day, 1981)

On this date in 1981, THE TEARDROP EXPLODES made an appearance on the TOP OF THE POPS Christmas Day special performing REWARD, (Christmas Day, 1981).

This edition of TOTP was the only program part-hosted by John Peel in 1981 and the first he’d taken part in since 1968! It marked the beginning of an era when he became a regular presenter, often accompanied by David Jensen, and later by Janice Long.

The episode also featured a number of artists that Peely had championed throughout 1981, namely Teardrop Explodes, Human League, The Beat, Ultravox, Altered Images and OMD.

REWARD, released in Jan 1981, explodes on opening and continues in the same vein with its defining and crazed brass, punchy lyrics (written about the band’s invitation to record a John Peel session: "Bless my cotton socks I'm in the news") and pummelling bass line. Pure post-punk magic.
