GARY NUMAN - COMPLEX

It’s November 22nd, 1979, and tonight’s edition of Top Of The Pops features a promo video of COMPLEX, the second single to be taken from the GARY NUMAN album ‘The Pleasure Principle’.

COMPLEX was a slower, strangely moving piece with Numan’s vocals at their most mournful. It was first rate ambience and a brave choice for a single to follow CARS.

Here the script inverts that of the first single, leading with an extended instrumental passage: synthetric sounds vying for space alongside acoustic drums and piano, and electric bass.

The vocals are deliberately undersold and add significantly to the undertones of pathos and fear that haunt the track.

The video is that featured on the edition of TOTP but I’ve replaced the audio with a lip-synced live recording of Complex from the remastered LIVING ORNAMENTS '80 album.
