Dr Oleg Brandt - Bringing Afterlife to Life at CERN
Abstract:
The Standard Model, a tremendously successful "world formula" that describes the physical world as we know it, has a serious problem: it does not explain Dark Matter, which accounts for 4/5 of the mass in the Universe. In fact, the particle nature of Dark Matter is one of the biggest mysteries in physics today. The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN provides an unprecedented opportunity to search for Dark Matter in a controlled laboratory environment. In my talk, I will provide an overview of the vigorous and extensive Dark Matter search programme at the LHC. In addition to the exposition of the “mainstream” Dark Matter search programme using “standard” signatures, I will give a glimpse of other searches exploring alternative “exotic” signatures that involve long-lived particles, which the Cambridge High Energy Physics group actively explores.
