Abstract:
Fusion promises to be a safe, low carbon and sustainable part of the world’s future energy supply. The UK Atomic Energy Authority believe fusion energy can be an environmentally responsible part of the world’s energy supply in the second half of this century. However, there remain technical challenges to overcome to realise fusion as well as various other enabling measures which will be needed to make fusion a reality as soon as possible.
In this talk, Professor Mike Gorley, Chief Technologist at the UK Atomic Energy Authority, will be explaining why fusion could be impactful for humankind and the current political/policy context for fusion. The talk will then highlight some of the substantial technical challenges required to deliver a magnetic fusion powerplant and give a brief overview of some of the key deliverables and discoveries that will be required on that pathway. Ending with a look at the current major fusion programmes, including UK STEP reactor development.

About the speaker: Michael Gorley received a MPhys from the University of Leicester in 2010 and a DPhil (PhD) from Oxford University in 2014. He started working at the UK Atomic Energy Authority in 2014 establishing the materials technology group. Mike is now Chief Technologist at UK Atomic Energy Authority and a visiting Professor at the University of Bristol, with oversight of all the technology focused research across the organisation.
