Morula's the elephant self-comforts with her "dolly" | Living With Elephants Foundation

Morula has two distinct self-comforting behaviors. Here she is demonstrating what we call her dolly or blankie. She breaks a stick to the perfect length, and then balances it between her leg and chest. We think because of her traumatic past and because she was left tethered, for a very extended period at one point, that she developed these self soothing behaviors.

It is a habit she still continues, even when not stressed. Here she is contentedly waiting for Jabu to finish throwing mud.

Morula helps us understand that elephants are psychologically complex animals.
