Morula's Crazy Dance | Living With Elephants Foundation | Botswana
So at long last we have managed to get Morula's crazy dance on video. She does this dance when she is feeling anxious and wants to tell wild elephants to stay away.
There are two main reasons Morula is uncomfortable and nervous around wild elephants:
1. It is normal for females to stay in the herd they are born into their entire lives and never leave. Their relationships, with other related females, are life long. Wild females will chase her sometimes because they see her as a potential threat. They don't welcome her the way they do Jabu.
2. For the 1st 17yrs of Morula's life she had no herd or social support system. When we met her she would run the opposite direction, when she saw a wild elephant. She, as a result has real social anxieties because she never learn't proper social skills. Of course she also has to be careful because her situation is socially awkward.
