Cystography; specialized radiographic examination of the urinary bladder

Cystography is a radiographic examination of the urinary bladder using contrast media. It is performed to evaluate bladder anatomy, function, and pathology.

Purpose of Cystography
Detect bladder injuries (rupture, fistula).

Assess bladder diverticula or tumors.

Evaluate vesicoureteral reflux (backflow of urine into ureters).

Investigate recurrent urinary tract infections.

Post-surgical follow-up (e.g., bladder repair).

Procedure Overview
Patient Preparation

Explain procedure and obtain consent.

Empty bladder before exam.

Assess for allergies to contrast media.

Contrast Administration

Contrast medium (iodinated solution) introduced into bladder via catheter.

Bladder filled under fluoroscopic control.

Imaging

Radiographs taken in multiple projections (AP, oblique, lateral).

Fluoroscopy may be used to observe bladder filling and emptying.

Post-void images often obtained to assess residual urine.

Post-Procedure Care

Encourage hydration to flush contrast.

Monitor for discomfort, hematuria, or infection.

Types of Cystography
Conventional Cystography – Contrast instilled directly into bladder.

Voiding Cystourethrography (VCUG) – Images taken while patient voids to assess urethra and reflux.

CT Cystography – CT imaging after bladder filling, often used in trauma cases
