The Journey of Sustainability | André Harms | TEDxSUMAS

We are currently using a concept of indefinite growth in an eco-system with finite resources. There are 300 academic definitions for sustainability - the term means something different to different people or groups all-encompassing a long-term view.
Reaching a truly sustainable, regenerative business is a journey with no end but with a start and specific milestones on the way. While the ultimate goal seems unreachable, it is very effective to break it down into manageable tasks. This will create long-term meaningful impacts. Efforts towards regeneration will not only have measurable effects on lower costs, increased customer satisfaction, staff productivity, and free marketing or PR are just a few benefits that accompany sustainable businesses. André is the founder of @ecolutionconsulting , a sustainabilityand greenbuilding consulting firm based in Cape Town. André is an electro-mechanical engineer and qualified Renewable Energy Professional with extensive experience in design, project management, commissioning process implementation and auditing sites for #sustainabilityprojects. He was a key player in the success of Africa’s Greenest Hotel, Hotel Verde, being the lead #sustainabilityconsultant on the project.

Having spent 14 months in Antarctica as mechanical engineer and team leader of the South African National Antarctic overwintering expedition, he has a special interest in efficiency, functionality, serviceability and robustness of systems. With experience in Net Zero, EDGE, Green Star SA, LEED, project management and the implementation of the ASHRAE Guideline 0 commissioning process, André often performs multiple functions on projects. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
