Kalamazoo County deputy killed during chase, shot from moving vehicle by fleeing driver

KALAMAZOO COUNTY, MI — The man who fatally shot Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Deputy Ryan Proxmire fired from a moving vehicle, hitting Proxmire as he was driving, according to a Michigan State Police detective.

The Michigan State Police 5th District office has finished its investigation into the fatal shooting of Proxmire, and the shooting of Kyle Goidosik by deputies.

The Kalamazoo County Prosecutor now has the investigation to review, Michigan State Police Detective Lt. Shane Criger told MLive.

Proxmire, 39, was shot during a police chase on Aug. 14, and died from his injuries Aug. 15. Proxmire was posthumously promoted to sergeant.

Deputies were pursuing Goidosik, 35, of Vicksburg, who was later shot and killed by deputies. The chase started at the Shell gas station on 35th Street in Galesburg, and ended near the intersection of 44th Street and Q Avenue.

Michigan State Police 5th District sent the findings to the Kalamazoo County Prosecutor’s Office for review a few weeks ago, Criger told MLive. The state police detective outlined what happened during the chase.

Deputies were at the gas station in Galesburg for another call when they saw Goidosik. He had previously fled from Portage police and there was a “be on lookout” call for him, Criger told MLive.

Goidosik drove away in a van, which was towing a boat, and deputies immediately started the pursuit. There was a lot of debris flying off the van and boat, which was hitting Proxmire’s vehicle. Proxmire was the first police vehicle in the chase.

Proxmire had called out on the radio, saying his vehicle was getting hit by debris, Criger said. He said other deputies in the chase were some distance behind Proxmire.

Around the middle of the chase is when Goidosik shot Proxmire, Criger said.

“The suspect somehow fired a shot, while he was driving, back at the deputy,” Criger said, explaining the unlikely shot struck Proxmire inside his vehicle. Other deputies believed Proxmire’s vehicle was disabled, he said.

“When he was actually struck by gunfire, his vehicle stopped and everyone else thought it was just because his vehicle was disabled due to the debris,” Criger said.

People driving by and a nearby resident stopped because Proxmire’s vehicle was partially on the road with its lights on, Criger said. Another officer then took Proxmire to the hospital.

Deputies continuing to chase Goidosik did not know Proxmire had been shot, Criger said.

The chase ended near 44th Street and Q Avenue. Deputies and Goidosik were exchanging gunfire when Goidosik was fatally shot, Criger said.

Kalamazoo County Prosecutor Jeff Getting will release a ruling at a future date after deciding if the shooting was justified.

Kalamazoo County Sheriff Richard Fuller III could not be immediately be reached for comment.
