VE DAY - WWII VETERAN OF THE 87TH INFANTRY DIVISION

Today marks the 75th anniversary of the end of the war in Europe. As we look at this monumental moment and the global impact it had, it is easy to lose sight of the individuals and the lives that were each affected in different ways. For the next week we would like to share with all of you a few individual perspectives of the end of the war in hopes to shed light on the human response to this turning point in history.

For Mel Campbell, a Purple Heart and Silver Star recipient from the 87th Infantry Division, the war ended abruptly as you can see in the video below. As Campbell prepared mentally and physically to go into battle, four words were said that would alter his life. It is hard to imagine the relief that he must have felt as emotions rushed through and he realized he could finally stop. He was done. No more death, no more destruction, and no more fighting. After six long years the war had finally ended in Europe and 75 years later the relief is still visible on Campbell’s face.

Today as we celebrate the freedoms and liberties that were restored, may we also remember the sacrifice and the price that was paid by so many to free Europe. We will never forget.
