Market Garden - Kenneth ''Rock'' Merritt - 82nd Airborne Division
Take the time to listen to the testimony of CSM Kenneth "Rock" Merritt who took part in the invasion of Netherlands, operation Market Garden, exactly 73 years ago.
Rock Merritt joined the United States Army at the age of 19 and later volunteered for the Airborne. He was later assigned to HQ Co, 1st Battalion of the 508th PIR, 82nd Airborne Division. He performed his first combat jump in Normandy on June 6, 1944 and survived that bloody battle.
On September 17, 1944, Rock jumped in Netherlands with the 508th PIR "Red Devils" with the hope that the war would be over before Christmas. Operation Market Garden was a combined armor and airborne assault to seize and hold key bridges and roads deep behind German lines in Holland. The airborne phase of the operation consisted of capturing several bridges ahead of the armored force.
Unfortunately, allied forces encountered many issues during that operation....
