Hard to kill commercial fisherman

It’s not a single thing that makes commercial fishing tough. It a combination of things that I can’t explain. You have to feel it, smell it and see it. You will get sick. The most hardened sailors after decades of fishing still get sick. It is the 20’ foot swells. It is the smell of the fish guts spilling onto the deck, it is the smell of the coffee that has been sitting on the heater for a few days and the smell of dinner (which is the same thing you had the night before) sitting in the heating pot. It is decades of fish eyes and scales cooking and freezing into the wood of the boat. It is the exhaust from the diesel engine. It is the first mate smoking those virgina slims on the deck. It is not sleeping for days at a time. It is missing fingers from the nets, chains, and heavy equipment.
