How to Use MyFitnessPal to Lose Weight | Step by Step Guide

Today we're going to give you a step by step guide on how to use Myfitnesspal to lose weight.

Step one to using myftinesspal for weightloss is to download the app and sign in. It's going to try to give you calories and macros to follow in order to help you lose weight, but I don't think you should listen to it. I believe myfitnesspal is a great tracker, but a mediocre prescriber.

Instead I want you to step on the scale and then start tracking. Track absolutely everything that has calories in it. Check your weight again after 1 week. If you bodyweight is roughly the same you found your maintenance calories. The easiest way to calculate your maintenance calories is to add up all the calories you ate for the week and divide it by 7.

Now we're going to calculate how many calories you need to eat to lose weight. Go to menu, then goals, then click on the macros tab, from here you're going lower your calories by 15%. You want to keep your protein nice and high if you're fairly lean. A good place to start is roughly 1g per pound of bodyweight.

You might be wondering what to do if you hit a weight loss plateau. If you hit a snag in your weight loss you should just drop your calories down another 10% and ride this out. Continue this process for continued weight loss.

Some frequently asked questions with myfitnesspal is whether or not you should add exercise. In my opinion, if you've already been exercising, no, you shouldn't add exercise back in. If exercise is as new as your diet, you might want to consider adding some exercise, but err on the side of underestimation, because you probably aren't burning as many as you think. If you're someone who has already been exercising, don't add exercise back in because that was already included in your maintenance calories.

The second question is what to do if your food is hard to decipher in myfitnesspal, my advice is just to choose the highest calorie option and roll with it. For instance, something like lasagna is hard to accurately input into myfitnesspal, so just choose a high calorie option and the rough serving size you had.

Last few caveats, you should do resistance training while losing weight, this will help preserve lean muscle tissue which is important for long term health.

Lastly, I encourage you to still eat a variety of fruits and vegetables in your diet in order to avoid any nutrient deficiencies.
