The Death-Defying Life of the Colorado River Gauger
Welcome to Wonderhussy Adventures #228
If you’ve ever been boating down on the Colorado River below the Hoover Dam, you might have noticed steel cables stretching across Black Canyon at certain points…with very sketchy wooden carts hanging on them. These were a part of one brave man’s commute — a river gauger who lived down canyon in the 1920s and 30s, in a little stone house on the riverbank near present-day Willow Beach.
As part of the Hoover Dam planning process, the gauger had to travel upriver each day to measure silt and water levels in the Colorado — and the path to the gauging station was NOT for the meek!
The riverside trail from his cabin site peters out when the canyon becomes too steep, and from here he had to traverse SUPER sketchy wooden catwalks bolted into the rock face — and then pull himself across a side canyon in one of those wobbly wooden carts on a steel cable. Then he had to cross the river itself in a similar cart — all to reach the gauging station, located in a rickety wooden shack perched precariously high above the Colorado River, bolted to the Nevada side of the canyon. Then after he’d taken his measurements, he had to go back the entire way — and he had to do this every day! Talk about a tough job — YIKES!
