STORYLINE
US President George W. Bush looked unscathed as he joined fellow G8 leaders for a summit dinner in Gleneagles, Scotland on Wednesday, after his earlier collision with a local police officer.
Bush collided with a local police officer and fell during a bike ride on the grounds of the Gleneagles golf resort.
The president suffered "mild to moderate" scrapes on his hands and arms that required bandages by the White House physician, said White House spokesman Scott McClellan.
The police officer was taken to a local hospital as a precaution, McClellan said. Police said the officer suffered a "very minor" ankle injury.
The accident occurred on asphalt, McClellan said, but Bush was wearing a helmet. It was raining lightly at the time.
The officer, who was on a security detail, is a member of the police department of the Strathclyde police department, McClellan said.
The fall did not affect Bush's schedule. Dressed in a tuxedo, he attended a dinner hosted by Queen Elizabeth II at the annual Group of Eight economic summit. He showed no signs of distress.
After a first course of smoked salmon and roasted langoustines, leaders of Britain, the US, France, Germany, Italy, Russia, Japan and Canada and their wives tucked into roast lamb accompanied by broad beans and peas, aubergine and parmesan polenta.
A 1990 Chateau Climens was also on offer, alongside drinks from all the G8 nations. Wines from Italy, Germany and California; Smirnoff vodka; Japanese sake; and Scottish and Canadian whiskies.
Afterwards the Queen met the French-trained chef who prepared the banquet, Andrew Fairlie, and his staff.
Bush and his wife then emerged from the banqueting room, the president looking unscathed after his accident.
They were followed by the leaders of Russia, Japan and Germany walking three abreast.
British Prime Minister Tony Blair and French President Jacques Chirac were next, both looking cheerful after Britain's victorious 2012 Olympic bid.
London beat its cross-Channel opponent on the fourth ballot of the International Olympic Committee vote, marking the end of the most hotly contested bid race in Olympic history.
