Watercolor Painting | A vibrant sunflower

I’ll be painting a vibrant sunflower in the hot summer sun. This is an intricate flower to draw with overlapping petals, a detailed disc of seeds, and a furry stem. I’ll be sharing a few tips that will help you.

First, let’s carefully sketch the drawing. I’ll draw the outline of the seeds in the center of the flower, then add each petal one by one. I’ll focus on the angles of the petals and adjust the length accordingly.

Second, as you all know, the sunflower is yellow. But instead of painting the whole thing yellow, I’ll use a variety of colors. I’ll use the whiteness of the paper to express the highlights of the flower. And for the shadows, I’ll mix orange, brown, and olive green to create an orange-brown color. You’ll probably end up using less yellow than you think.

Third, for the seeds, I’m going to work on it as a whole instead of trying to draw each seed one by one. Think of the seeds as one part, and divide it into the dark and light areas. I’ll then highlight some of the seeds along the bordering line between the dark and light.

Fourth, for the stem and leaves, I’ll highlight it along the edges. I’ll use the whiteness of the paper to express the sparkling of the furry stem. I’ll draw each hair of the stem at an angle, and this will be enough to express the furriness.
