Liszt - Berceuse, S174ii (Lantos)

Following Chopin's death, Liszt began working on the text of his book about Chopin (an almost unprecedented tribute from one major composer to another) and it is hardly surprising that Liszt soon became engrossed in musical forms that Chopin had made his own - the polonaise, the mazurka, the berceuse and the ballade. While Chopin was alive, Liszt never touched these genres, but the death of his erstwhile friend in October 1849 seemed to trigger within him the urge to temporarily incorporate some of Chopin's characteristics into his own works, the result being a body of piano music (Two Polonaises, Berceuse, Mazurka brillante and the Two Ballades) in which Chopin's personality continues to speak from beyond the grave. Further reinforcing this Chopin connection is Liszt's Berceuse: both his and Chopin's are in D-flat major, both consist of an increasingly elaborate series of variations on a simple four-bar theme and both pieces unroll across a tonic pedal-point.
