STORYLINE:

US planes continue to fly sorties over Gardez in eastern Afghanistan in what the US says is the biggest air and ground offensive of the war.

Wave after wave of B-52s and other aircraft unleashed bombs for a fourth day to try to soften enemy positions in the snowcapped peaks.

Nine US soldiers have been killed in the fighting since the operation began Friday night.

Allied Afghan commanders sent fresh troops in on Tuesday to bolster US-led coalition forces battling al-Qaida and Taliban fighters.

The offensive is designed to pound the renegade militants with waves and waves of airstrikes and squeeze them out of their hide-outs.

Meanwhile on Tuesday, three Allied Chinook helicopters arrived in the area from Kabul.
