STORYLINE:
Ukrainian marines have landed on the left bank of the Dnipro River after launching incursions into Russian-held territory in an attempt to pave the way for more troops to move across in the Kherson region, an Associated Press crew on the ground witnessed earlier this week.
The effort could signal further advances into occupied territory as Ukraine mounts a counteroffensive.
Ukrainian officials have not yet confirmed or denied an offensive is underway.
The troops began moving on Oct. 14, with the support of other Ukrainian forces and assault units.
According to the soldiers on the ground, Russian forces have been pushed out of their advanced positions and they are under the control of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
The claim could not be independently verified.
The AP crew witnessed marines carrying battle gear and jumping into rubber dinghies going into the Dnipro River.
Gunfire could be heard shortly after.
During the ensuing battles, some Ukrainian troops returned carrying injured soldiers.
“Talk to me,” a medic instructed a wounded soldier whose hand shook uncontrollably from the shock of sustaining a flesh wound.
Another gazed dully in front, barely responsive to the medic’s questions.
The injures were a reminder of the protracted war of attrition as both sides are looking for battlefield advantages ahead of winter.
The Russian withdrawal from the city of Kherson came six weeks after Russian President Vladimir Putin illegally annexed the Kherson region and three other Ukrainian provinces, vowing they would remain Russian forever.
Moscow’s forces still control about 70% of the Kherson region.
Russia is throwing more units into its effort to take a key eastern Ukraine city, Western analysts say, after apparent setbacks that have slowed its dayslong onslaught.
Ukraine is repelling such attacks and is looking to breach Russian defenses.
On Friday the Ukraine's top military commander visited Avdiivka, a city just north of Donetsk, in a region of the same name that Russian forces partially occupy.
