【Title】Beyond being-in-the-world: Projective and open awareness
【Abstract】
For Martin Heidegger, the fundamental way that a human being exists is as being-in-the-world. All particular ways of being, like being an artist or being religious, are founded on the basic fact that we always already find ourselves in the world. Finding ourselves in the world includes being open to particular kinds of possibilities. Heidegger characterizes these possibilities as projects; that for the sake of which we engage in our activities. The project of being an artist, for example, opens up the possibility of taking up the brush to capture the sunset on a canvas. Accordingly, the kind of awareness that pertains to being-in-the-world can be described as a projective awareness since it projects itself towards the for-the-sake-of-which. Heidegger (at least during the period of Being and Time) believed that our awareness necessarily takes the form of projective awareness. In this presentation I will describe a more fundamental form of awareness that we call open awareness. Open awareness discloses a different kind of possibility than projects. To be aware in this sense is to be open to what we call the “unfolding-towards” structure and “thingly possibilities” of phenomena. By contrasting these with the for-the-sake-of-which structure and projects, and drawing insights from the Kyoto School tradition, I will attempt to show how this possibility structure is intrinsic to the phenomena themselves. The upshot of the presentation is that underneath the possibilities that our projects carve out, the possibilities that pertain to the things themselves are hidden, waiting for our awareness to open up to.
