The early 2000s saw the boom in virtual reality platforms like The Second Life and Sims, that allow people to recreate their entire lives online. While the low-fi - even cartoon-like - graphics and robotic voices might have made it feel less realistic than today's AI offerings, millions of users were hooked on these platforms so much that their real life and virtual life were blurred.
