Deadly gang war erupts over illegal tobacco trade | 60 Minutes Australia

The now-arrested crime boss Kazem Hamad has reportedly taken a significant financial stake in Manchester Cigarettes, a brand that despite being illegal in Australia has become the most popular in the country through the black market.

The 41-year-old, known as Australia's most powerful gangster, was arrested by Iraqi authorities in mid-January following intelligence provided by the Australian government.

The tobacco company is headquartered in London but operates out of a free port zone in the United Arab Emirates. Criminal syndicates then smuggle their product into Australia and distribute them to retail shops. The profits are estimated to be in the billions of dollars.
