Boyd Matson interviews Steve Boyes on National Geographic Weekend (Episode 1326)

Boyd Matson interviews Steve Boyes during the 2013 Explorer Symposium in Washington DC in June. Boyes is a 2013 Emerging Explorer for his work on African parrots and the Okavango Delta. This 10-minute interview on National Geographic Weekend (Episode 1326) talks about the living the baYei way and the importance of respecting hippos wherever they may be.

Helpful notes:
/ The water lily rhizome is consumed along with the seeds from pollinated flowers. Rhizomes are often erroneously referred to as "bulbs" (hence "water lily bulb"), but are actually swollen underground woody stems filled with nutrients and tannins.
/ The area in the middle of the Okavango Delta that we access via Madinari Island has only been utilized by poachers since the closure of the hunting camp in the 1960s, except maybe a few exploratory walks in the 1980s and 90s.
/ Additional photographs provided by Raghava K K, Neil Gelinas, Chris Boyes, Giles Trevethick, Amy Attenborough, Jerome Hillaire, Matt Copham, and Barry Bishop.
