IT vs Computer Science (CS) | Which is Faster at WGU? (2021)

Today I'm going to answer the questions: "With the direction IT is going, should I consider getting a degree in Computer Science? At WGU will a CS degree take less time than a BS in IT?"

Hey Everybody, Josh here again
I get a lot of really great questions from people that I think others could benefit from, so I'm going to try to do a few Q&A episodes this month.
As always, I want everybody watching this to fact check me, call me out, and add your opinions in the comment section
These videos are meant to benefit everyone, not just the original asker so please feel free to contribute!

Today's question is from nic rog. And he asks...

So this is a great question.
I'll answer this question kind of in two parts with the first part addressing the direction of IT and the second part comparing the CS degree with the IT degree.

So as far as the direction IT is headed, You're very astute in notice that IT is definitely changing and evolving.
I guess it kind of always has been evolving obviously, but naturally things are getting much more complex as we continue to stand on the shoulders of giants.
That is, we as humans continue to leverage and build upon the complex technology that was created by the smart people that came before us.
Some of this technology might include AI/ML, blockchain applications, automation, and bit data analytics, that is, Analyzing large datasets to derive some kind of previously unknown intelligence.
In order to improve upon or even take advantage of many of these complex system, we often need to have a good deep understanding of computing or maths, and that's where computer science comes into play

Having said all that, I want to point out that it's not a zero-sum game.
What I mean by that, is just because a lot of innovation is happening in IT that requires a CS-level knowledge, it doesn't necessarily mean that IT jobs are going to decrease.

All these new complex systems still need a platform to run on
The underlying infrastructure still needs to be supported by someone
We still need cybersecurity personnel to write policies and implement controls
We're still going to have servers, laptops, phones and stuff that normal people will be using and need help with
We're still going to have networking infrastructure
All of this stuff is not going away and will need IT personnel to manage and maintain it
For sure the way it's maintained is changing, but it still falls within the IT discipline

So when you're making the decision for IT or computer science, it just kind of depends on what you want to do and what kind of opportunity cost you want to deal with.

If you ask me "which degree is better to have" I will say hands-down. the CS degree is BiS (b-roll)
Getting a CS degree will change the way you think about not only computing, but life in general. However, you don't NEED a CS degree to do well in IT and you should get it only if you have a strong desire to, or if you really need it for another endeavor

Talk about Manager

So to summarize the answer to your question on which degree to get, you're right, IT is changing, but there will always be regular IT jobs.
