This is a great question, and something I can probably talk about a lot!
So looking back, I don't think there is one SPECIFIC thing, per se, that helped me get a higher salary, but a combination of things.

The things you can do to help increase your salary can be broken up into two categories.

The first category is stuff about the job you go for.
The second category is stuff you can do to make yourself "more expensive"

So in terms of the job you go for, the following factors will on average, increase your salary.
Job-Related:
Barrier to entry/Difficulty
Demand
Location

Self-Related:
Credentials
Experience/Skill
Complacency Avoidance (job hopping is good)
