Protesters Clash With ICE as Minneapolis Tensions Flare

A federal officer shot a man in the leg on Wednesday night in Minneapolis after the man fled a targeted traffic stop and a confrontation ensued.

The man, a Venezuelan national who entered the US without authorization, was struck in the leg after the officer feared for his life and safety as he was being ambushed by three individuals.

The shooting occurred amid heightened tension in Minneapolis, where thousands of federal agents have surged into the city as part of a sweeping immigration crackdown by the Trump administration.

Under the Trump administration, ICE has undergone a rapid evolution. While its authority hasn’t changed under US law, ICE’s size and the scale of its operation have ballooned to unprecedented levels — made possible in large part by a massive infusion of funding from Congress.

That’s left state officials scrambling to file lawsuits and pass legislation to limit the agency’s power on the ground.
