Adlerplatz in the Olympic Park Berlin: Dome Hall, British Army Headquarters
The two impressive eagles on top of the pillars characterise the position of a former state institution: The “House of German Sports” was the official seat of the so called “sports leader of the Reich”. From 1933 onwards this newly created office was officiated by the SA-man Hans von Tschammer und Osten. It did not matter that he was completely unknown within the German sport scene. The crucial factor was that he was a politically reliable member of the Nazi party. His office was supposed to control sport in Germany. This demonstrates the totalitarian demand of the III. Reich to Nazify sports like all other parts of society, too. During National Socialism, physical exercise was mainly discussed only in relation to military training.
