The May Field: Mass propaganda, the Mussolini visit in 1937 and its current use

Behind the Olympic Stadium Berlin there is a huge, flat area called May Field. It offers standing room alone for up to 76 500 people; the total capacity is about 250 000. The construction of the May Field was no coincidence, as the National Socialists built the new airport on the Tempelhof Field at the same time and so were in need of a new rally ground. The May Field was to meet two demands. During the 1936 Olympic Games it was a competition ground for various sports, such as polo. After the Games, it provided a backdrop for huge propaganda shows. Above its opening, a large speaker’s desk was positioned in the middle of the stands, the “lectern of the leader”.
