Interview with Deane Rogers, cycling’s first individual time trial champion (junior TT, Quito 1994)
On the day of the junior time trials at the 2022 UCI Road World Championships, I bumped into Deane Rogers, the first winner of a TT in the history of cycling.
In Quito, Ecuador in 1994 the individual time trial was introduced to the UCI’s world championship program. The event made its debut at the junior worlds and Deane Rogers got the win.
It was the last time a V-shaped rainbow jersey was awarded to the winner of a junior world championship but it marked a new era in cycling: the TT was a medal event for individuals.
While waiting for the start of the 2022 junior time trial to take place in Wollongong, I spoke to Deane about that win. We also talked about his nephew Cameron Rogers who made his world championship debut today.
The interview ends with a comment about the influence of one of Australian cycling’s most pivotal figures, Heiko Salzwedel. In a week, it will be the first anniversary of his passing and I asked Deane to offer some insight into the impact of the coach, mentor, visionary, and friend of many.
Click play and watch what is a very impromptu interview and it provides a bit of history about an event that took place in Wollongong today.
