Ice bath in ‘Recovery Bar’ at TDU Bike Expo, easing pain of fractured ribs + Victor Popov interview
This is an overview of my first proper ice bath experience. It’s not a new concept and it was easy to do while I was in Adelaide for the #TDU2023. Each day included a couple of dips into cold water in the inflatable bath by iCoolSports that was part of the ‘Recovery Bar’ at the TDU Bike Expo. It became a regular feature of daily routine for a week this summer. A fortnight before the race, I fell in my backyard and fractured three ribs… my first thought after the accident was, ‘Will I still be able to ride my bike at the TDU!?’
The answer is: yes, and the exercise actually served me well but, as anyone who has fractured their ribs knows, sleeping can be painful... I could ride my bike without too much trouble, but finding a comfortable position in bed was difficult.
After my fall, the first person I called was Victor Popov, a sports physiotherapist who I have known for over 25 years. “Jump in an ice bath,” he told me, “it’ll do you the world of good.”
It just so happens that Popov is now consulting for Life In Motion, “a human movement company focused on blood health”, which has recently launched Plasmaide.
This video offers an overview of my ice bath experience(s) and Victor offers his guidance with some gentle bath-side coaching. He also explains what the Recovery Bar and Plasmaide are all about during an impromptu interview shortly before my first session in the cold water.
