What is the Commons?

The commons are resources we all share — air, oceans, public land, even knowledge.

They exist outside of private ownership. But because they belong to everyone, they can be overused, polluted, or depleted.

Economists call this the “tragedy of the commons” — when individual self-interest destroys collective goods.

But history also shows communities can manage shared resources through cooperation, trust, and rules.

If we can’t care for what’s shared… what’s left to own?
