What Does Being True to Yourself Really Mean? What is Authenticity?

Existentialist philosophers like Kierkegaard, Heidegger, and Sartre argued that authenticity means living in alignment with your true self — not the roles society assigns you.

But it’s complicated. We all shift depending on the situation: with friends, family, strangers. Does that mean we’re fake, or just adaptive?

Sartre warned about “bad faith” — lying to ourselves to avoid the burden of freedom. Heidegger said most people live in the “they” — conforming to what everyone else expects.

Authenticity isn’t about stripping everything away. It’s about choosing consciously, instead of passively.

If you don’t decide who you are… who does?
