Davy Jones (Monkees) "Papa Gene's Blues" live in 2010

This “Texan samba” was written and sung by Mike Nesmith for the Monkees 1966 debut album. Most Monkees songs were written by outside songwriters (Boyce & Hart, Neil Diamond, Carole King, etc.), but Mike and Davy Jones managed to squeeze in their share of originals on the LPs. In this clip, Davy jokes about how he got into songwriting, noting that Mike’s publishing royalties meant Mike drove a Cadillac while Davy drove a Volkswagen. We always had fun playing “Papa Gene’s Blues,” drawing out as many country-cowboy riffs we could. This clip was from a concert somewhere in the USA, late January 2010.
