Was on the road to Rishikesh

I stood where monkeys shouldn’t hide
I walked past hovels where people lied
I saw the tangled rooted tree
I realized it was more than me

They sang of hills and the latest fool
We heard the words but didn’t get the math

Rishikesh is a small city in the Himalayan foothills, known for temples and schools and scenic views of the Ganges River. On the edge of town sits the former ashram where, in 1968, the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi famously met with The Beatles, Donovan, Mike Love, and other notables to learn about meditation. In 2016 we toured India and had a few days in Rishikesh—a lovely city—and found this ashram, which is now a tiger reserve. We walked around, took photos, sang songs, and even became the first Western people to perform live in one of the prestigious temples (an auspicious occasion). Back in the USA a few years later, this song came to me—a George Harrison-inspired playback of our adventure in Rishikesh, with allusions to “white album” songs, the landscape, the tour bus, and the Fab 4.
