This week Dr. Dan and I are discussing the topic of carbs.
The Ketogenic Diet restricts carbohydrate intake sufficiently to cause ketosis, which is a metabolic state where most of the body's energy supply comes from ketone bodies in the blood instead of glucose. This style of dieting gain popularity through it's ability to help some lose overall body fat.
Gluconeogensis is a metabolic process by which the body produces sugars (namely glucose) from non-carbohydrate precursors. It is on of the two main mechanisms used by the body to maintain blood glucose levels, especially on a low carbohydrate diet.
Without taking enough calories and dietary protein, a low-carbohydrate diet could result in muscle loss, fatigue, mental confusion, and mood changes.
The Glycemic Index (GI) offers information about how foods affect blood sugar and insulin. The lower a food's glycemic index or glycemic load, the less it affects blood sugar and insulin. Insulin being our fat storing hormone.
The only time during the day we would benefit from fast digesting carbs is immediately post exercise.
Overall the goal should always be to try and achieve your carbohyrdate needs through whole food sources. Staying away from processed or fried foods. Carbohydrates such a potatoes, rice, quinoa, beans, and legumes just to name a few.
