They Left the Front Doors Open! - Abandoned Town Hall & Post Office - Ipoh, Malaysia
I initially set out to find and explore the old Train Station of Ipoh, Malaysia, but instead I stumbled upon the abandoned Town Hall & Post Office building. I walked around this beautiful building while wandering weather or not it would be possible to get into the place, but to my surprize the workmen had left the front doors open!

The Town Hall & Post Office building was designed by F.M.S Government Architect A.B Hubback F.R.I.B.A in 1913 while its Construction Supervisor was Federal P.W.D Assistant Architect W. S. Huxley & Architect Thomas Steele. The contract to construct the building was awarded to a local contractor, Towkay Lim Weng Ching. The Straits Times dated 22 July 1913 reported that as of 22 July 1913 the contractor had started its operations just after the contract was awarded.
The Town Hall & Post Office building was built to accommodate a town hall consisting of a public theatre where the British elites and high-ranking officers socialised and came to watch plays, musicals and performances besides it was also occupied by state administrative offices. In the east section which was also the back portion of the building, it housed the Post Office whose entrance faced Post Office Road (now Jalan Dato' Sagor).
According to the experts, this stately building was designed in Edwardian Baroque style surmounted by colossal Greek and Roman columns. The colonial building occupied an area of approximately 6500 sq meter. It is located opposite the majestic Ipoh Railway Station across Club Road (now Jalan Dato' Panglima Bukit Gantang Wahab)
The Post and Telegraph Office Department was relocated to this building from Taiping in 1928 while in 1948 the Town Hall section served as the district police headquarters for some years.
In 2008, a forgotten tunnel was found below the Town Hall linking to the adjacent Ipoh High Court, believed to have been used to transfer prisoners when the building was a Police facility.
The Town Hall & Post Office was gazetted as the Malaysia's National Heritage in 2017 under the National Heritage Act 2005.
The building was closed and abandoned since 2004.
According to the Ipoh Echo, the Ipoh Town Hall and Old Post Office to be Renovated into and Art Centre, and is expected to be completed by 2024.
