Lost in the Zinna Forest - The Forbidden Soviet Camp

Hidden in the depths of the Zinna Forest, and some 85 kilometers south of Berlin, there lays an abandoned military army camp and airport near the small town of Jüterbog.
This site was once home to the Prussian army, who bought 250 acres during the 1860's to be used for a shooting range. During the Franco-Prussian War, around 9,000 French prisoners were sent to Jüterbog and put to work there, extending the site. Many died and were buried there.

The Dicke Bertha (Big Bertha) monster 42-cm howitzer was tested here before the First World War, which shot at targets in Jüterbog from more than 10 kilometers away.
A military airfield (Flugplatz Altes Lager) was built at Jüterbog in 1933.

After the end of the Second World War and the defeat of the Nazis, the Red Army took over everything here. The Soviets turned Jüterbog into one of their most important military bases in the DDR, with an estimated 40,000 soldiers stationed at the camp.

This is a truly massive military complex, and a day is nowhere near enough time too fully explore this location, but it was a great day and a great adventure.
