Hey guys, Brad here from Live Lean TV, and today I'm diving into the often overlooked topic of lifting tempo and how it impacts your workouts for strength, muscle building, and fat loss.
Now, let's break down what tempo actually means in weight training. Essentially, it refers to the speed at which you perform each phase of a lift: the lowering phase (eccentric), the lifting phase (concentric), and any pauses at the top or bottom.
Research shows that tweaking your lifting tempo can have a significant impact on your results, whether you're a beginner or a seasoned lifter. It's just as crucial as your set and rep counts and the weight you lift.
So, what do those four numbers in a tempo prescription mean? Let's use a barbell back squat with a tempo of 4010 as an example. The first number (4) indicates the time in seconds to lower the weight, the second number (0) represents any pause at the bottom, the third number (1) is the time to lift the weight up, and the fourth number (0) is any pause at the top.
But what if you can't maintain the tempo throughout the entire set? Don't worry too much about it, especially as you approach failure. It's more important to focus on time under tension for the first few reps, but once you're fatigued, just push through until failure, regardless of the tempo.
