SpaceX's new Falcon Heavy Design to Launch NASA Orion to the Moon...It Made All Others Useless
SpaceX could save NASA nearly three billion dollars for each crewed mission to the Moon.
That’s because leading experts are now seriously considering Falcon Heavy as an alternative to launch Orion, instead of relying on an expensive and risk-prone vehicle like the SLS.
But more importantly, this rocket could even solve a problem that Starship itself hasn’t fully addressed yet.
So what exactly is this approach?
Let’s find out.
SpaceX's new Falcon Heavy Design to Launch NASA Orion to the Moon...It Made All Others Useless
Back in late 2025, when a White House proposal to cut costs sent shockwaves through NASA and contractors like Lockheed Martin, an uncomfortable question emerged… What if SLS actually gets cut?
That’s when contingency plans started taking shape.
Orion, the agency’s “favorite child,” a spacecraft built specifically for the massive SLS, was suddenly put on the table and compared against commercial launch options. Falcon Heavy. New Glenn. Both were under serious consideration.
At the time, though, Falcon Heavy wasn’t seen as a perfect fit. Orion weighs around 35 tons with its launch escape system, and the mission required sending it directly toward lunar orbit, something Falcon Heavy simply couldn’t handle in that configuration.

Then came 2026. And everything shifted.
Under Administrator Jared Isaacman, NASA reshaped the Artemis roadmap. Artemis 3 was no longer a lunar landing mission. Instead, it became something closer to Apollo 9, a test flight in low Earth orbit.
Orion would launch to LEO, then rendezvous and dock with a commercial lunar lander, either Starship HLS or Blue Moon. From that point on, the lander takes over the journey to the Moon.
And just like that, Falcon Heavy suddenly made a lot more sense.
The first reason is simple. Cost.
An SLS and Orion launch runs close to 4 billion dollars. Falcon Heavy, even in expendable mode, costs around 150 million. That gap alone is hard to ignore.
