What is dandruff?

All healthy people lose skin cells on their scalp and the rest of their body all the time, but these are normally not visible. The white, ugly, crusty flakes we see in dandruff are actually a cluster of dead skin cells that for one reason or another retained a high degree of cohesion and detached as one piece from the scalp. These can then attach to the hair and litter the scalp, or fall off on the shoulders and torso. The scalp also gets very itchy in the process. Dandruff affects about one in two adults in the general population, and is found in both men and women, though it is possible that it affects men slightly more often.

It’s a condition without significant medical implications, but from an appearance and quality-of-life point of view it can become very important. It often has a seasonal pattern to it, becoming worse in the winter.

Now from a medical point of view, dandruff is on the milder end of the same spectrum with a condition called seborrheic dermatitis. Whereas dandruff is confined to the scalp and does not involve significant inflammation, seborrheic dermatitis presents with inflammation and can appear in other areas like the face and chest, and will often required medical intervention.

Causes of dandruff

Scientists believe there are various causes of dandruff, but the most common is a fungus called Malassezia. This little guy normally inhabits the scalp along with a few other bacteria, and in cases of dandruff he is often found to multiply out of control, essentially taking over the scalp from the other microorganisms.
