Dog switching reward from food to ball

Rewarding your dog with the ball when initially teaching behaviors is NOT to your advantage. The game has to be taught prior to using it in training. Using food in the beginning of teaching behaviors is very direct , does not take physical energy, and allows for a immediate reset for the next repetition. If the game of toy reward is not introduced separately, we have the challenge of resetting the next repetition. The dog would be rewarded with the toy- now we would have to get it back. That can create a lot of issues! Imagine that I have you perform a behavior and reward you by giving you the money. Now I take the money away and make you do it again? Once you would have learned the game and the rules, having fun with it- I could take that route.
