American Bandstand 1970 -Dance Contest- Up Around the Bend, Creedence Clearwater Revival

Put on your microskirt, vertical striped Farah slacks and fringe vests, we’re jumping back up to 1970!

Rob Grill and Warren Entner of The Grass Roots along with David Soul from “Here Come The Brides” which just ended its 2 year run on ABC (and in 1975 from “Starsky and Hutch” also on ABC) pick the LA finalists for the 1970 dance contest. David Soul also went on to have a #1 hit song (a feat The Grass Roots and CCR never accomplished) in 1977, “Don’t Give Up On Us”.

“Up Around The Bend” reached #4 as the B-side to “Run Through The Jungle”. This week it is at #10.

Dancers: Steven Rice and Linda Gibson win today’s contest and will go on to the final round. Starting in 1969, Bandstand would have dance contests in cities across the country to widen the competition. The finalists from the various cities would then compete in-studio. The winners, as always, were chosen based on votes sent in by mail. Steven’s twin brother Sterling, who shouts from the audience, was a finalist last year with his partner Gayle Jefferson. According to viewer Keith Idota, who remembers watching the show in ‘70, Steven Rice and Linda Gibson ended up winning the contest a few weeks later.

…..And the pop festival Warren Entner mentions, occurred in conjunction with “Expo ‘70”, a world’s fair held in Osaka, Japan from March-Sept. At the Expo, the world got its very first look at IMAX when the first IMAX film, “Tiger Child”, was shown.

Airdate: May 23, 1970
