FOOTSTEPS: Benjamin van Haeff (Song-Poem)

In April 2022, I visited the Isle of Erraid on the west coast of Scotland. Here I spent a week with the beautiful Findhorn Community, who are custodians of this wild and remote island. When I arrived, I felt a deep wish to sink into the wild heart of this place, for my body to be rewoven into its ancient conversation. Out of this intention, this poem was born, a living prayer to return to our ancient and wild hearts.

I enter again the vast ocean
That holds my wild heart
In wonder, joy and belonging

Invitation: connecting to the ephemeral beauty of the eternal now and honouring the precious gift of life can be deeply restorative experience to the human spirit. As a simple exercise, I invite you to take this poem with you into a wild place, perhaps even just your backyard. Listen to the poem or speak it yourself, and then walk, noticing each step as you receive the hidden grace of each moment.

Footsteps
My footsteps have never been here before
And so I pray

Let my mind be like bog and earth
And my heart
Moist
With the fertile promise of spring

Let my body rest like stone
Singing its ancient belonging to the sky

And let me pray
That my my thoughts be scattered to the wind
And the sun and rain
