Back in 1992, a 79-year-old woman accidentally spilled a cup of McDonald’s coffee onto her lap. But this wasn’t just a minor accident. The coffee had been served at around 190° Fahrenheit—hot enough to cause third-degree burns in just a few seconds. The liquid soaked through her clothes, leaving severe burns on 16% of her body, including her thighs and groin.

She spent 8 days in the hospital, underwent skin graft procedures, and endured a long, painful recovery. Her medical costs piled up quickly, so she asked McDonald’s for $20,000 to cover the expenses. Instead, the company only offered $800.

Left with no choice, she took the matter to court. During the trial, her lawyers showed evidence that McDonald’s had already received more than 700 complaints about similar coffee burns. The jury ruled in her favor, initially awarding her $3 million in damages. Though the judge later reduced the amount, the lawsuit became one of the most famous legal cases in American history. And that is why.
