Nutella exists thanks to a chocolate shortage. During World War II, cocoa was so limited in Italy that pastry maker Pietro Ferrero had to come up with an alternative. Instead of using pure chocolate, he mixed ground hazelnuts, which were cheap and easy to find, with sugar, milk, and a small amount of cocoa.

The result wasn’t even a spread at first—it was sold in thick blocks meant to be sliced and spread on bread. But kids ignored that and just bit into the blocks like candy. Ferrero saw the demand, melted it down into a creamy version, and renamed it Supercrema, which officially became Nutella in 1964.

Today, Nutella sells billions of jars every year, making Ferrero the world’s biggest buyer of hazelnuts.
