BOUGAINVILLE INDEPENDENCE // A Post-Referendum Update

In December 2019, Bougainville voted overwhelmingly in favour of independence from Papua New Guinea. But is it any close to become the world's next independent country and a member of the United Nations? In this video, I take a look at how things have developed since the referendum and consider current state of play in negotiations between the sides.

Hello and welcome! My name is James Ker-Lindsay. Thanks for joining me to take an informed look at International Relations with a particular focus on territorial conflicts, secession, independence movements and new countries.

The island of Bougainville is widely touted as the most likely candidate to become the world's next independent state and the 194th member of the UN. In December 2019, it was announced that it had voted by a huge majority for independence. However, hopes that the process was going to be quick seem to have been wildly optimistic. In this video, I explore what has happened since the result was announced and show that the things are being held up by both sides - the government of Papua New Guinea and by political developments in Bougainville.
