Hidden among the dry valleys of northern Colorado, Chimney Hollow Reservoir is transforming an empty landscape into one of the most important water storage projects in the United States. Unlike traditional reservoirs built by damming a river, Chimney Hollow is being created inside a naturally dry valley and filled through a complex network of pipelines, tunnels, and water control systems.

Building the project requires constructing a more than one-hundred-meter-high rockfill dam, installing an asphalt impermeable core layer by layer, excavating water tunnels through the mountains, and creating large spillway and outlet structures capable of safely managing the reservoir for decades to come.
