How Dubai Built the World’s Largest Observation Wheel in the Middle of the Ocean

How Dubai Built the World’s Largest Observation Wheel in the Middle of the Ocean

Built on the artificial Bluewaters Island off the coast of Dubai, Ain Dubai was designed to become the largest observation wheel ever constructed — a giant structure rising more than two hundred and fifty meters above the sea with a steel weight exceeding that of the Eiffel Tower itself. But behind the record-breaking size was an engineering challenge far more complicated than simply building a giant wheel.

Constructing the project required reclaiming land from the ocean, installing deep foundation piles beneath an artificial island, lifting a central spindle weighing nearly one thousand eight hundred tons, and assembling the enormous circular rim high above the ground using temporary steel spokes before replacing them with hundreds of high-tension cables.

Join Mandarin Tech as we explore how Dubai engineered one of the most ambitious mechanical megaprojects in modern history — and why the world’s largest observation wheel suddenly fell silent only months after opening.
